September 8th 1955: Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer travels to Moscow for negotiations. It was the first visit by a German head of government in the Kremlin after the Second World War. Negotiated were the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the release of the remaining 10,000 German prisoners of war on Soviet soil. Adenauers mission was a crucial step towards the recognition of the Federal Republic of Germany in West and East. He strengthened the weight of Bonn on the international level and opened the door for further negotiations. '
