October 7th 1989 - 40th Anniversary of the GDR
October 7th 1989: In the presence of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the GDR leadership celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the German Democratic Republic. Its a grand spectacle with parades marches and a flag waving audience. In reality this is the last gasp before the end. While East German leader Erich Honecker is celebrated by his guests protests fill the streets. The citizens are tired of the SED regime and hope for free elections the opening up of borders and unrestricted permission to leave the country. Those hopes are fulfilled. On October 18th Honecker resigns on November 9th the wall falls. Germany is reunited the 40-year division is overcome.
