January 5th 1919: The so-called Spartacus uprising, with which the Communists and the left wing of the Independent Social Democrats attempt to topple the government of Ebert / Scheidemann, breaks out in Berlin, Germany. It was the last attempt of the radicals, to decide the November Revolution of 1918 in their favor, and to prevent the first free elections set for the 19th of January. The government responded with a general strike and let volunteers-corps march against the insurgents. The struggle was bloody on both sides. On January 15th 1919 the uprising was put down.
