April 15th 1945 - Liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp
April 15th 1945: After a ceasefire agreement between German and British forces, the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen near Hamburg is handed over without resistance. The liberators face a horrific sight. The camp was last used as shelter for prisoners from concentration camps near the front lines and overcrowding resulted in mass dying. More than 50,000 prisoners lost their lives here, amongst them the young Jewish girl Anne Frank. The SS guards are arrested by the British and are ordered to bury the bodies. Some of them will later be put on trial.
