May 16th 1974: The German Bundestag elects Helmut Schmid the chancellor of Germany. Schmidt, born 1918 in Hamburg, joined the SPD in 1945 and held various offices, amongst them as a senator in Hamburg, as the SPD Group Chairman and most recently as Finance Minister of the Socialist-Liberal government of Willy Brandt. As Willy Brandy resigned from his post as chancellor due to the Guillaume espionage affair, Schmidt carries on the political aims of the coalition. He set milestones in domestic and foreign affairs and contributed greatly to the normalization of relations with the GDR.
