July 10th 1943 - With the support of massive air strikes, allied troops under the command of U.S. General Patton and British Field Marshal Montgomery land in Sicily. They are met by little resistance from the Italians. The Germans are also unable to offer resistance worth mentioning, due to their commitments to the Eastern front. On July 22nd is Palermo is occupied, by mid-August is the island is cleared off the last remaining German and Italian troops. The landing at Sicily played a key role in the Second World War. For the first time it enabled the Western powers to leap to mainland Europe and at the same time it initiated the liberation of Italy, from the dictatorship of Mussolini.
