November 9th 1918 - Proclamation of the Republic in Berlin
November 9th 1918: The Republic is proclaimed in Berlin by the Social Democrat Philipp Scheidemann. The event, greeted with great joy by the public, is in reality a crucial test. While Scheidemann represents the parliamentary system, only a few hours later the Left wing Socialist Karl Liebknecht proclaims a free socialist republic from the city palace . Riots follow, which result in the so-called Spartacus uprising and the suppression of the same by government and volunteer corps in January of 1919 . For historians, however, the 9th of November 1918 remains a milestone in the evolution of a first democratic state on German soil.
