March 21st 1871 - Otto von Bismarck becomes Chancellor
In January 1871 Otto von Bismarck - in the Palace of Versailles – launches the Prussian-German National State. On March 21st 1871 the former Prussian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Kaiser Wilhelm the I is appointed first Chancellor of the new German Empire. In foreign policy, Bismarck henceforth strives to balance forces between the major European powers, but in his domestic policy he creates plenty of tension. In the "culture struggle", he infuriates the Catholic Church and the Centre Party, and then does the same to the young Social Democrats through the "socialist laws”. With the accession to the throne of Wilhelm the II, the era of Bismarck comes to an end, and under the new leadership the German Empire steers toward dangerous waters
