May 19th 1935: Inauguration by Adolf Hitler of the new section of the Autobahn between Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt. The dictator lets himself be celebrated as an innovator even though the plans to expand the expressway network go back to the Weimar Republic. Like the so-called KDF-Car the forefather of the Volkswagen Beetle Germany's modern highways were to symbolize the dawn of the modern. In reality they were to serve as processional routes for the military for the coming war.
