October 15th 1924: After 81 hours and after having covered over 8000 km of flight route, the airship pioneer Hugo Eckener lands with Zeppelin LZ 126 at the US Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey. It was the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in the history of aviation. Eckeners transfer of the zeppelin (as part of the German reparations) was seen by the world as a sign of the desire for peace and reconciliation between Germany and the opponents of the First World War.
