August 9th 1945 - Atomic bomb on Nagasaki

August 9th 1945: The U.S. bomber "Bockscar" takes off to drop the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. the primary target originally was another city, but it could not approached due to poor visibility. In Nagasaki itself the pilot did not succeeded in bombing the local arms factories. Instead he dropped the bomb on a densely populated urban area. Over 20,000 people died on the spot, tens of thousands more died in the first months after the drop. Nagasaki, like Hiroshima, has become a symbol of nuclear war of extermination. Although Japan was defeated strategically, the U.S. government under President Harry S. Truman pushed through the use of the bomb.
