August 29th 1962 - CIA discovers rocket launchers
On August 29th 1962 air reconnaissance of the U.S. provides the first photographs of the construction of Soviet missile launchers in Cuba . These and subsequent surveillance pictures show a serious threat to the U.S., because the missiles can hit every town and every area of the United States from Cuba. The photos trigger the Cuban missile crisis, which leads the world to the brink of nuclear war. The conflict between the U.S. and USSR is finally resolved by the fact that not only the Soviet Union withdraws its missiles from Cuba, but the U.S. also withdraws its nuclear weapons stationed in Turkey.
