June 19th 1927 - Rudolf Caracciola wins first car race at the Nurburgring
June 19th 1927: Rudolf Caracciola wins the first automobile race at the Nurburgring. It was not his first victory. The year prior he had won the Grand Prix of Germany on the so-called “Avus” shown here, and became famous in the 30s with the legendary Mercedes Silver Arrow, "which earned him the title of European champion three times. After 1945 Caracciola tried to repeat his earlier successes. Following an accident in Switzerland, he had to retire in 1952.
