April 29th 1945 - Liberation of the concentration camp Dachau

April 29th 1945: Dachau is liberated by the Americans. The U.S. Army moves against the city nearby Munich and the infamous concentration camp, with two infantry divisions. The camp was abandoned by the SS without significant resistance. The liberators face a horrific sight. Most survivors were emaciated beyond recognition. The soldiers also found a train filled with dead bodies from the concentration camp Buchenwald. As a result arbitrary killings of SS guards occurred as an act of revenge, in which some of the former prisoners were also involved. The hatred was more than understandable. Overall, according to the latest estimates, over 40,000 people have died in Dachau. The concentration camp site is now a memorial and serves as a reminder of the period of Nazi terror.
