October 12th 1960 - Khrushchev shoe banging incident before the UN
After the shooting down of a U.S. spy plane over the Soviet Union had led to a deterioration in relations between the superpowers in May of 1960, the Soviet Communist Party leader Nikita Khrushchev, on October 12th 1960, uses the General Assembly of the UN for a spectacular faux pas: During his speech, he takes off his shoe and bangs it on the delegate-desk, to underline his protest, and thereafter abruptly leaves the meeting.
