May 20th 1954 - Chiang Kai-shek becomes president of Taiwan
On May 20th 1954 Chiang Kai-shek is elected President of Taiwan, by the island nations National Assembly. In 1949 the Chinese officer and politician had sought refuge in Taiwan along with the remnants of his troops from the Communists surrounding Mao Zedong. Allying himself with the Communists at the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war Chiang Kai-shek loses the power struggle during the civil war which breaks out after the end of World War II and out of which in the end Mao Zedong emerges as the winner. As President Chiang Kai-shek also rules his "Republic of China" dictatorially. He never gives up his claim to sole-presentation to be President of all of China until his death in 1975.
