February 24th 1956 - Khrushchev proclaims peaceful coexistence
On February 24th 1956 the delegates of the 20th Congress of the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union)vote to approve the new foreign policy line of their party leader Nikita Khrushchev. It proposes to lead the worldwide contest between socialism and capitalism from now on the basis of a "peaceful coexistence" of the two systems. Khrushchevs new foreign policy results in a "thaw" between the superpowers of the U.S. and Soviet Union during the time of the Cold War. But in his power sphere Khrushchev responded with full force against any democratic aspirations. When a U.S. spy plane is shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960 Khrushchev takes the event as an opportunity to return to a hard line in foreign policy. He provokes the U.S. through a planned deployment of Russian missiles to Cuba. After all the division between East and West is manifested by the building of the Berlin Wall.
