January 25th 1949 - David Ben Gurion, wins the parliamentary election in Israel


 

While Israel is still entangled in a war of independence with its Arab neighbors, since its foundation in May 1948, the first democratic elections to the Knesset, the parliament of the young Jewish state, take place in January of 1949 David Ben Gurion emerges as the winner of the elections on January 25th 1949. On February 14th he is elected first Prime Minister of Israel, and on February 24th the war of independence ends with the Armistice Agreement between Israel and Egypt. The Arab states did not achieve their goal, to militarily foil the founding of the state of Israel.
