May 3rd 1968 - May riots in Paris
On May 3rd 1968 student riots in Paris escalate and spread into the province. The revolt had begun in March when several hundred students occupied the University of Nanterre. Now demonstrations and clashes with police occur in the Latin Quarter. On May 10th students occupy the district to build barricades. They have engaged in bloody street battles with police. But the residents support the protesters, not the power of order. From 13 May solidarity to the workers. Results in the first strikes, on 20 May, 10 million workers in the general strike - France is paralyzed, shaken the authority of the president.
