July 6th 1959 - George Grosz dies


 

In the 1920s George Grosz is one of the early founders of Dadaism and member of the “Red Group of Berlin ". The sensing the takeover of the Nazis he emigrates to the U.S. at the beginning of the 30s. He becomes a U.S. citizen and works as a lecturer at Columbia University in New York. In 1953 he founds a private art school on Long Island. In Germany the Nazis defame Grosz's pictures as degenerate art. But after the war Grosz returns to Berlin more frequently. There he dies - allegedly after a night of heavy drinking - on July 6th 1959.
