September 30th 1949: The last U.S. aircraft of the airlift lands in Berlin. Although the Soviets had ended their blockade of Berlin in May, the airlift was maintained as a safety measure for several more months. The supply of Berlin from the air had strengthened the relationship of West Germany and West Berlin with the Western Allies, and it also nourished the hope, that after the spectacular self-assertion of the people of Berlin a reunification of Germany would be possible O-Ton Ernst Reuter (No Texts were given – no translation?)
