June 16th 1977 - Wernher von Braun dies
On June 16th 1977 Wernher von Braun dies. Von Braun was arrested by the Allies as a war criminal in 1945. But during the beginnings of an arms race between East and West, the exceptional expertise of the German rocket scientist is quickly in demand. A short while later, von Braun makes his career in the U.S. space program. He is heavily involved in building the Saturn rocket that brings the first man to the moon in 1969. However, von Braun had learned, trained and tested his craft of rocket engineering in the services of the Nazis. He designed the V2 for the people in power. Its Hitler's supposed secret weapon used during the war of aggression against Great Britain and causing great devastation. Also disputed is von Braun's attitude towards the use of forced labor and concentration camp prisoners under murderous conditions for missile production.
