July 9th 1868 - Gustav Noske is born
On July 9th 1868: Gustav Noske is born. During the revolutionary turmoil following the end of the First World War, the Social Democrat, as the first defense minister of the Weimar Republic, acquires the nasty nickname "bloodhound." given to him by his political opponents. His suppression of the Munich Soviet Republic is indeed bloody. By force and using volunteer corps, he puts down the Spartacus uprising in Berlin in January of 1919. To save the young Republic, the Social Democrats join forces with the old powers and the extreme right. But as Noske tries to resolve two volunteer army brigades in 1920, the military stages a coup and puts the Nationalist Wolfgang Kapp into power for a few days. After the Kapp Putsch collapses under the general strike of the unions, Gustav Noske also resigned. He becomes a government official in the province of Hanover. In 1933 he is dismissed from service by the Nazis. After the assassination attempt on Hitler, Gustav Noske is arrested in 1944 and freed only after the Berlin had been conquered
