July 8th, 1919 – Walter Scheel is born
Former Federal President of Germany Walter Scheel is born on July 8th, 1919. He becomes a member of the FDP. From 1961 to 1966, under chancellors Adenauer and Erhardt he is responsible, as a federal minister of economic cooperation, for development aid. In 1969 the first coalition between the SPD and FDP is formed, making the FDP a left-wing liberal party. Walter Scheel becomes Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor. This was also the time of the great political project called the “Eastern treaties”. Walter Scheel also becomes known as a performer.
