October 29th, 1976 - Honecker becomes State Council Chairman
On Oct 29th, 1976 Erich Honecker becomes the GDR State Council chairman. He effectively unites all high office positions . He obtained his first office in 1946 as chairman of the state youth organization FDJ. During the construction of the Stalin Allee he voluntary worked extra shifts. In 1972 he took over from the first Secretary of the SED, Walter Ulbricht. During the 1970s he was able to promote the international recognition of East Germany, here at a CSCE conference with Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. He reached the zenith in 1987 with a state visit to Germany. In 1989 he was overthrown.
