April 4th, 1968 - Assassination of Martin Luther King


 

Baptist minister and civil rights activist Martin Luther King was shot and killed on April 4th, 1968. King held his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28th, 1963 in Washington; more than 250,000 people marched peacefully to support the civil rights legislation of President Kennedy. King had several meetings with Kennedy. King was the most prominent representative of the civil rights movement. He advocated civil disobedience as a means to end racial segregation in the Southern parts of the United States.
