September 18th 1989 - First Monday demonstration in Leipzig
On September 18th 1989 the first of the so-called “Monday demonstration” took place in Leipzig. With the motto: “We are the People”, every week hundreds of thousands of East Germans throughout the country protested against the political situation. The goal was a peaceful, new democratic order, and in particular the end of the regime of the Socialist Unity Party, the SED.
