August 21st, 1944 – Preparations for the founding of the United Nations
In preparation for the founding of the United Nations – here images of the founding in 1945 – a meeting was held on August 21st, 1944, at a Country House in Dumbarton Oaks, Washington. Participants were the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and China. Model for this new world organization was the League of Nations. At this conference, the first charter draft of the United Nations was developed. Member States pledged to adhere to international law and to respect human rights. The final founding of the United Nations was sealed on June 26th, 1945 in San Francisco, when 51 countries signed the Charter.
