August 31st, 1990 - BRD-GDR settlement agreement
On August 31st, 1990 after long negotiations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, a contract, with the aim of uniting the divided Germany, was reached. The GDR was to join the Federal Republic of Germany on October 3rd, 1990. The West German negotiator was Wolfgang Schäuble, the head of the Federal Chancellery. (original sound bite) For the GDR, it was Prime Minister Lothar de Maiziere. (original sound bite) On July 1st, 1990 the first step towards a reunification of the two German states, was an economic and monetary union. The Deutschmark became the common currency.
