July 4th, 1954: At the Wankdorfstadion of Bern in Switzerland, major underdogs Germany, beat Hungary which had been deemed un-defeatable, 3-2, and win the World Cup with coach Sepp Herberger for the first time. In this thrilling encounter, with the game at a draw for over an hour, Helmut Rahn storms on goal in the 84th minute, shoots and scores: (original radio commentary). The national team’s return to Germany is a triumphant one. Mountains of presents rain down on players and their companions. In the crowded Olympic Stadium of Berlin, Federal President Theodor Heuss congratulates the team and presents the silver laurel to each player.
