August 9th, 1974 - U.S. President Richard Nixon resigns - Watergate affair
On August 9th, 1974 the unthinkable happens in Washington: A U.S. president resigns because of his involvement in criminal activities: Richard Nixon chooses to resign, before his impeachment would come into effect, for his involvement in the Watergate affair. By now it seems fact that Nixon, at the end of his first term in the spring of 1972, hired four agents of a secret group in the White House, called "The Plumbers." He instructed them to break into campaign headquarters of the Democratic Party in the Watergate Hotel in Washington, and to install listening devices. Richard Nixon wanted to ensure his re-election by any means necessary - even illegal ones.
